My child is very shy and often struggles to make friends at school or in social settings. I’m worried this could affect their confidence and self-esteem as they grow older. I would love to hear from other parents who have experienced this. What strategies helped your child become more confident and improve their social skills?
I get it, my kid is super shy too, and I worry about the same thing. We started with just one friend over at a time, not big groups. I also try to talk to them about how they feel, like if school or making friends feels hard. Little things like saying “hi” to someone, even though it’s small, helped a bit. It’s slow, but I think it gets better bit by bit.
As a parent of two, one of my children was extremely shy. We found that arranging small, one-on-one playdates with kids they felt comfortable with really helped. Over time, these small interactions gave them the confidence to engage in larger group settings.
As a parent of a 5-year-old, we practiced social scenarios at home. I would role-play as another child, and we would talk about how to introduce themselves or ask someone to play. This practice gave her the tools to approach kids at school more confidently.
